Panasonic S1 Review - Part 1 - First Impressions!

Wow, I never thought Panasonic would be bringing out a full frame camera, super excited to have this one to try out for the week. Tomorrow im flying down to wellington to shoot a wedding and im taking the S1 with me!

The AF tracking looks like the same jitter you get from Panasonic's contrast detection DFD on other cameras, where it pulses back and forth to grab focus. Images will come out sharp but watching the camera track focus is super distracting. I'm still not used to it on the GH5.

Love the snappiness of the first seconds and editing overall (like when you edited in running your finger over the card-slots for a split-second).

Kinda looks like the g9. And I must say that is my favorite body. The Fujis are great performers and nice looking but I really don't like the lack of grip and shutter button. I love a slightly angled shutter. Does the S1 have half press shutter release?

A well done preview, short and concise. Glad to see a Sony shooter doing a review on this as well. If it's possible, can you comment on the focus speed and accuracy between the S1/S1R + Pana 50 and the A7III/ARIII + ZA 50. The ZA 50 has great IQ, but the focus speed is not exactly blazing fast. I feel that kinda hamper the quick AF system on the Sony camera, especially the A9.

Hey Chris, you’ve covered more stuff in your 8 min video than all the other videos about the camera combined. There’s this one guy who’s been sharing is experience and the first features he spoke about were the aspect ratio, copyright and some other nonsense.

About the focus, I’ve read the only honest article about the S1 so far. It mentioned the jittery image too, which may actually come from the DFD focus system. From what I understood, this system is constantly checking focus by going past and back to the subject. It would explain the jitter but I hope I am wrong and that this can be fixed in a firmware - It would be a shame to be looking at such a high resolution EVF if the image is jittery.

Point is S1 is outdated contrast detection AF. GH5 with upgraded contrast AF appears to be way ahead It also has features that the Si lacks + the fact it's nimble and easy to pack 2 bodies + 2 lenses to cover a days shoot. I would never trade my GH5 kit for the S1.

As a M43 shooter (G80) this looks awesome but personally I will wait for the generation after this IF I ever move away from M43. I don't see myself doing that unless Tony Northrup's clickbait wasnt clickbait 🤣
