Very true. The samurai of Japan were the same, they have this image of being nobile warriors who protected the weak but in reality they were just thugs who had no issue dismembering a civilian for minor disrespect. Sengoku period japan and Midevil European times were pretty similar. People just had different morals and ways of viewing the lower classes. Common folk were nothing to them. Media sometimes has the right idea, theres an anime i watched where a little girl was cut down by a samurai because while she was playing with a ball it rolled into the road and scared the samurais horse, and in the movie Braveheart when those knights started k*lling the people in William Wallace's village. I'm sure there were some truly noble knights but they were most likely few and far between. The high warrior classes of midevil times were just oppressive monters in fancy armor who terrorized common-folk and did so on their own without orders from their kings or lords. Kind of like police today....

But calling the hired thugs is a bit weird. Knights were noble men.
