Das Summerjam ist das wohl bekannteste Festival in Deutschland für Fans von Reggae und artverwandten Sounds. Der 1953 als Seydou Koné in Dimbokro, Elfenbeinküste, geborene Alpha Blondy war 2017 dabei und zählt zu den bekanntesten Reggae-Künstlern der Welt. Dabei waren seine Anfänge gar nicht einfach: Kurz nach der Aufnahme seiner ersten Tracks verschwand sein Produzent mit den Bändern, und Koné erlitt einen Nervenzusammenbruch.
Seit Mitte der 1980er Jahre veröffentlicht er poppigen Afro-Reggae. Er singt nicht nur auf Englisch, sondern auch auf Hebräisch, Französisch, Arabisch und in einigen westafrikanischen Sprachen. Er gilt als Unterstützer der Einheitsbewegung Afrikas und setzt sich in seinen Texten mit sozialkritischen Themen auseinander.
