A good friend showed me the song about a year ago. He quickly became what I'd call my best friend. Now he's taking off halfway across the country. May this song always serve as a reminder of my time as a 17 year old

I love how this song is kinda depressing but also really optimistic. It's really great.

when I was six years old I went on a road trip across the united states. My mom's brother gave us this song burned to a cd and we played it all the way across country. I knew all the words and loved this song. Now it reminds me of that time and makes me smile at how much my life has changed.

When you're exposed to one thing for so long, that thing becomes your life and reality. If you spend your life in a cave, staring at the shadows, they're your reality. And when faced with truth, you can't understand it. And it takes someone with courage to reach and crawl out of that cave and face truth head on.

EDIT: This comment is on my resumé now. Glad my retelling of M&S’s retelling of Plato’s “The Allegory of the Cave” could help people!

"and I'll find strength in pain" this song has helped me so much.

This song is based of Plato's Allegory of the Cave. (Where three prisoners are kept in the darkness of a cave all their lives, never knowing what's on the outside and there is a fire behind them. People walk by the fire with animal and things on the way to the market and they can see the prisoners can see their shadows- but don't realize the shadows are not the real thing. One day, one of the prisoners goes outside and sees the real things and his whole world is changed. He goes back to tell his friends in the cave- the other prisoners- but they don't understand what he's saying, nor do they want to. They are comfortable in their ignorance.)

I have to say I really admire this band for making a reference based off Plato's philosphy of The Cave. At first I thought it was based off the yearning for freedom from a bad relationship, but the more I listen and try to analyze, the final conclusion is that it's a little more than that. Freedom from the binds of one's self and the society around them is how I interpret the song.

But the amazing thing is much like philosophy, music is also subjective to an individual's reality and can mean virtually anything you want it to. There's no right or wrong, so long as it's important to you. But that is to say, I appreciate artists who allow their audience to think and interpret freely opposed to simply painting in black and white, which Mumford and Sons do the former.

i’ll always remember this song playing in my dad’s car back when my parents got divorced 12 years ago and everything was scary and confusing for me. his car smelled like cigarettes and my anxiety made me feel sick but this song made it bearable

"Come out of the cave walking on your hands, see the world hanging upside down you can understand dependence when you know the makers land" I thinks this is saying you've been looking at life all the wrong way staying in you "cave" of shadows and you'll be happier if you can understand how beautiful everything is.

This was the first song I heard from Mumford and sons. It was at my Grandfather's wake. Everyone was talking and drinking and I didn't feel up to it. So I started talking to the daughter of my Grandfather's carer who let me listed to music on her phone for a bit. This was one of the songs.
It still makes me think of my Grandfather a little when I listen to it.

Easily one of the most amazing things I've ever heard. The best songs become more meaningful over time.

Glad some musicians haven't forgotten about Plato and homer. They emphasized freedom. One of the better bands of today.

This song reminds me of my brother. He died back in November. I tried helping him but it wasn't enough. He had his demons but I know deep down he cared about everyone he met.

A few years ago this song kinda stirred up a fearful confusion. What’s with the noose thing? Why is this song so violent? And the tone and progression overall got me feeling some sort of regressed sadness from somewhere in me. Now that I’ve grown and learned more, I understand why I was intimidated and sad and confused, and really I can compare my past feelings to the feeling of someone realizing everything they’ve known is a lie. Intimidated, sad, and confused. A really perfect song for Plato’s allegory of The Cave. This is a song that I want aliens to hear from us to portray such emotions to them. It’s that good.
