Horrible feeling when you confront someone about behavior that’s been eating at you, and they don’t only not care, they frame their perspective in a way that makes you question your own judgement and memory. Even though you know what happened, and you know it wan’t right.

If only Carmy knew he got his culinary degree from Greendale Community College

Chef David and the composer from Whiplash would be great friends

I like how David is weirdly proud of him. It's vile and repulsive but he is genuinely impressed with Carmy, proud of the chef he is. He thinks everything he ever did was worth it, a necessary step to make Carmy the person that he is.

I feel like Carmy’s trauma is the real thing to take away here. Chef David had no reason to be as mean as he was, but in reality, he doesn’t care about the end result of what he caused because he never saw the aftermath of what he actually put Carmy through.

Confronting narcissists is a waste of time and energy....the best thing to do is understand you will never make them see reason and try to make peace with that..

Joel McHale’s performance as Chef David in my opinion is both brilliant and weird.

Season 3 was a mixed bag but the writers managed to deliver what is probably the best scene in the series so far.

I think about this scene so much, you have no idea. Through the entire exchange, Carmy needs to get something, anything out of him, and at every turn, he gets nothing.

In flashbacks, Chef called him “Carmy” not Berzatto, not even Carmen. He calls him what his friends and family call him. And then Bergazzo.

Considering Carmy’s relationships with Mikey and his mom, it kind of feels like he sees any kind of attention as some emotional connection. Those interactions with Chef changed Carmy. They got deep into his head until the stress ruined him.

He cut everyone, “all the bullshit, ” out. For months if not years, Chef was probably the only person he interacted with. Chef got physically close to him and talked to him all the time. That had to have meant he cared about what he was doing to him, any normal person would.

But Chef doesn’t even remember his name. He does not care. He did his job, and he succeeded in what he set out to do. The means didn’t matter. They won.

Carmy destroyed himself for him, to prove he could handle it, to prove he was the best. All of that destruction festered horribly over his time in The Beef and The Bear. He wants Chef to care that he caused this but doesn’t for a second.

So yeah. Rough night.

This is how ppl who excuse beating children sound. "My parents did it to me and I turned out fine, look at me!". You can grow up successful after being abused, it doesn't mean it was right. Glad we got a good impactful example of what its like talking to those kinds of ppl, its infuriating.

as a former phd student who worked under an abusive advisor, this scene really hit me. people like this exist unfortunately and you would think there would be some relief in getting to express how the person made you feel but as another commenter said, there is no yield in confronting a narcissist. they will just find a way to make it about themselves, and portray themselves as a hero no less. sending love and hope to whoever resonated with this experience. you are not what happened to you ❤

"I don't think about you" Is the biggest insult

The next season is definitely going to be about his evolution as a kinder softer person after realizing that his traumas have nothing to do with what make him a good chef

Working for sociopaths that berate and yell at you for their own pleasure and then justify it by making you "better" at your job is not uncommon and happens to many people. It may make the victim/employee better at their craft but affects their psyche and mental well being in the worst possible way. Chef Dave's response is so typical of these types of people.

I think people like Chef David are essentially just sociopaths who can justify their behavior in ways most normal people would find illogical. He not only puts him through trauma but then takes some measure of credit for his success? He strikes me as a drill instructor. But a drill instructor cannot and should not take credit for a trainees success as it was not his burden to bear, merely being there to create the stress

I'm surprised Carmy wasn't intimidated by his shadow.

The fucked up thing is that you can't tell if Fields is being genuine here, or if it's just another of his manipulative tactics.

There is nothing like pulling the courage together to confront your abuser/tormentor and have them treat you like nothing, like what they did to you is nothing, or in my case with my father gaslight me and flat out deny it. There is a pain in it that can’t be described. And it makes you feel even more like nothing. Jeremy portrayed that great here.

I find the parallel between chef David and Carmy's mother. A person's intensity that was so overwhelming that it negatively impacted. His growth. Him tiptoeing and working around these intense personalities. In order to gain some type of comfort and solace from these authority figures in his life. Only to be disappointed that they didn't think of him the way he needs to be thought of or even at all.
