No one's commented in a year so I thought I'd chime in. First heard these guys while dj-ing at a college radio station. 1:00 to 6:00 a.m. Brutal. Played these guys and others to lighten my spirits in the deep dark of my sleepy night. Saw these guys a few times back in the day. So amazing live. This is one o' my favorite songs from back then.
Thanks to Luna, Yo La Tengo, Built To Spill, The Treepeople, Pavement, The Flaming Lips, The Sea And Cake, Stereolab, The Pixies, The Cowboy Junkies, and other indie bands for enriching my spirit during a formative time in my life.

I accidentally deleted my earlier comment, so forgive me for repeating myself if you saw it. When I first heard their album Bewitched, I was absolutely blown away. I must have played that song Tiger Lilly 10, 000 times that first month. I ended up seeing them a bunch of times. Always put on a great show. I have to say, however, that I think Penthouse is their best work. The songwriting, the melodies . . . and the times. I was 21 years old. I was about to get engaged, we were moving to a new city, and that CD was the soundtrack to it all. Everything was in front of me - the future, adult life, etc. All there for the taking. Life, however, is life. I've had good times and a lot of hard times. And while my marriage didn't last, we produced three great kids. Neither of us remarried or dated much. We plan on retiring together so the kids and grandkids (eventually) have a family compound for holidays and get-togethers. I played this kind of music for my oldest son when he was a toddler (he's 22 now) and he caught the bug. He digs Morrisey, The Smiths, Oasis, and all the 90's indie bands I loved. That puts a smile on my face. It's tough coming to face to with aging, but I wouldn't have traded my youth for all the tea in China. We were the last generation to experience the analog world. I'm damn proud to be part of Gen X.

Saw them in a tiny bar in Providence in '95 for 5 bucks. Got my money's worth for sure!

This sounds like something that would be on the show Pete & Pete with Big Pete narratoring a story about little Pete and I absolutely love it. I say that with all my respect to this song and the sound track to the show.

They say they like it because it’s a slow song with calibrated acoustics guitar and a good electric lead with a solo that is worth noticing 3:28

The outro of this song makes me feel like I'm standing on the side of the road as my drive quickly vanishes in the distance and there's nothing around but me.

In the tiny tiny hours
Between the evening and the day
We have placed our final bets
We have come out to play
Fancy drinks a lucky toasts
I like this time the most

You're out all night
Chasin' girlies
You're late to work
And you go home earlies

Lookin' lost in chinatown
Why are we hidin' from our friends
Rushing 'round in taxi cabs
Is it time to make amends
You'll get yours and i'll get mine
You can't be lucky all the time

You're out all night
Chasin' girlies
You're late to work
And you go home earlies

This is my favourite track on Penthouse by far. Closing guitars are killer. Don't know if the riffing is Sean Eden or Dean Wareham.

"Is it time to amends?"

Anybody notice how similar the art is between this and the D Plans Ice Of Boston Ep?
