Will My Short Shaft Outboard Motor Work? Fitting an outboard to a boat

preview_player
Показать описание
What does it look like when you put a short shaft outboard engine on a boat that should have a long shaft? I set my little two stroke Mercury 2.5 hp outboard engine, that is a short shaft - on the transom of my Boston Whaler which should have a long shaft outboard on it just to show how bad it would be, why there is a difference, and how to easily see if you have the wrong length outboard engine on a boat.

I drove a 3.5 hangkai on a 15ft sail boat and exhaust was almost sticking out but me and a buddy just sat at the back of the boat and the weight did it’s job in moving us 😂

I learned about long and short leg boats and motors some thirty years ago. A couple friends and I “borrowed” a boat and motor at a lake. We didn’t get far and on the way back to shore one of the owners was waiting for us on shore. Some apologies and paying for whatever fuel we used smoothed over any animosity. We were all known to each other as it was a small town but lessons were definitely learned that morning.

My Johnson 3.5 is way too short for my 16" transom. So i got a Merc 20 which is way too long 🤦‍♂️Guess ill just build a big jack plate. Figured Id go big or go home. Someone was saying it might have an extension in it that i can remove? idk maybe ill stick to the trolling motor for now

Do you know how long a short shaft is considered to be? I'm trying to buy an outboard for my boat that needs a short shaft and a guy I'm trying to buy from doesn't know if it's a short or lonf shaft. He sent me measurements but I don't know what's considered a short shaft

I would fashion a setup to drop the little mercury down if i really wanted to use that motor but realistically you need a much bigger motor for that boat period whether it be a tiller or what have you that little mercury would make a reasonable back up get us back to the dock motor whether it it is long enough or not it would work just fine rather than call seatow which is way way way more money than getting towed on land

Shorten the transom. 2 inches. I did mine & it works great

That's a problem you run into a lot on sailboats you need to get an outboard with an extra long shaft. But they make a mount that mounts to the transom and then the engine mounts to that and it has a hinge so it can drop down about 8 to 10 inches.

At about two or three knots I think it will be just fine it's a trolling motor.
