Our little buddy Roscoe P can tell if my blood sugars are high or low… and he’s FAR more reliable than my continuous glucose monitor.
In fact, he’s saved me multiple times when my CGM was off by 50-100 points.
How does this work?
When our blood sugars are high or low, our body gives off a particular kind of scent.
As a puppy, we trained him to identify low blood sugar scents, and eventually, high blood sugar scents.
He will paw at me when he believes my blood sugar is low or high, or when my number is rising or falling quickly.
Because continuous glucose monitors lag by 10-15 minutes, he can assess blood sugars in the moment and is much faster than the technology.
His breed also loves having a job to do… so he really does enjoy checking in with me.
And when he’s right? He gets SO excited.
He is a certified good boy and it’s amazing to have him be a member of the family, but also a second line of defense for my blood sugars.
