LYRICS:
On a warm summer's evening
On a train bound for nowhere
I met up with the gambler
We were both too tired to sleep
So we took turns a-starin'
Out the window at the darkness
The boredom overtook us
And he began to speak

He said, "Son, I've made a life
Out of readin' people's faces
Knowin' what the cards were
By the way they held their eyes
So if you don't mind my sayin'
I can see you're out of aces
For a taste of your whiskey
I'll give you some advice"

So I handed him my bottle
And he drank down my last swallow
Then he bummed a cigarette
And asked me for a light
And the night got deathly quiet
And his face lost all expression
Said, "If you're gonna play the game, boy
You gotta learn to play it right

You've got to know when to hold 'em
Know when to fold 'em
Know when to walk away
And know when to run
You never count your money
When you're sittin' at the table
There'll be time enough for countin'
When the dealin's done

Every gambler knows
That the secret to survivin'
Is knowin' what to throw away
And knowin' what to keep
'Cause every hand's a winner
And every hand's a loser
And the best that you can hope for
Is to die in your sleep"

And when he'd finished speakin'
He turned back toward the window
Crushed out his cigarette
Faded off to sleep
And somewhere in the darkness
The gambler he broke even
But in his final words
I found an ace that I could keep

You've got to know when to hold 'em
Know when to fold 'em
Know when to walk away
And know when to run
You never count your money
When you're sittin' at the table
There'll be time enough for countin'
When the dealin's done

You've got to know when to hold 'em (when to hold 'em)
Know when to fold 'em (when to fold 'em)
Know when to walk away
And know when to run
You never count your money
When you're sittin' at the table
There'll be time enough for countin'
When the dealin's done

You've got to know when to hold 'em
Know when to fold 'em
Know when to walk away
And know when to run
You never count your money
When you're sittin' at the table
There'll be time enough for countin'
When the dealin's done

My parents were divorced so every other wkend my dad would pick me up for my wkend with him. He always seemed to have this song playing. It was nice knowing what kinda music he liked. Now whenever I hear Kenny Rogers I think about the times I was with my dad RIP to my dad Love and miss you everyday

Timeless words of wisdom. As a management consultant who cared too much about my clients and my job, I spent far too long chasing lost causes, trying to help people who refused to listen, refused to be helped and who would never change. Like Don Quixote I tilted at too many windmills and never knew when to walk away. I wasted so much emotional energy at much cost to my health and learned so much of Kenny Rogers' advice the hard way. This song is truly an ace that you can keep.
RIP KR. Thanks, dude. I wish I'd listened when I was younger.

It just doesn't get any better than this. Not just this song, but all those songs we grew up with in the 60's, 70's and 80's ...I know every generation says it, but seriously look at the world now. We are like aliens, those of us who grew up with this music. The world is so different now. What they sing about, what they speak about -- it's mostly nothing ...it's foreign ...thank God I grew up in the 70's and 80's ...I'm lucky, I got to live through that time of innocence and beauty. No phone glued to my hand. Pinball and ten pin bowling was as hardcore as it got lol ..and the music just kept feeding the soul

Not a country music fan, but Kenny Rogers was one of the greatest singers in my opinion. Especially his duet with Dolly Parton. Islands in the Stream is one of my favorites.

Kenny Rogers is 1000% the king of country. No Garth without KENNY.

My dad used to pick and sing this one along with many others. Majority of people thought he should have made a career out of it, he was offered starting contracts. But he wasn't much for singing in front of strangers without some chemically induced confidence. 😢 Little over a year since he passed
