Step inside the pitch meeting that led to Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory!

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, based on the Roald Dahl book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a classic movie that audiences still come back to today since its release in 1971. Starring Gene Wilder as the wacky (sometimes terrifying) factory owner Willy Wonka, the movie is full of yummy-looking candy and the occasional terrifying imagery.

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory definitely raises lots of questions. Like what’s up with Grandpa Joe suddenly getting out of bed after being stuck there for twenty years? Why is that Candy Man just throwing candy at kids? Did Wonka know that one of the kids was going to fall into the chocolate river? What was up with that boat scene? Are these kids going to be okay? Why is Grandpa Joe such a sketchy guy? What’s Charlie going to do as the owner of a candy factory?!

To answer all these questions and more, step inside the Pitch Meeting that led to The Hobbit: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory! It’ll be super easy, barely an inconvenience.

Ryan talking about the tunnel scene is everything I ever wanted and more.

The laughable part? If I remember correctly, Roald Dahl hated this movie because it wasn't as dark as the book

“Not as sketchy as Grandpa Joe though” 😆 only noticed as an adult just how suspicious he was

You know I never really realized how unbelievably dark and disturbing parts of this movie are

Willy Wonka: "Here is a room where everything is edible, eat eat eat!" Moments later: "You horrible glutton, how dare you drink from my river of chocolate"

The grandfather actually is the bad guy. All his advice to Charlie is bad and almost gets Charlie killed. He's basically the devil on Charlie's shoulder.

"So you have a movie for me?"
"Yes sir I do!"
that exchange gives me such happiness to hear :D

The close up with Grandpa Joe going to town on the wallpaper had me dying.

Charlie's mother sure got the raw end of the deal in all this.

Just remember everyone, that freaky boat ride is probably the most safe thing in the entire movie

The incredibly haunting tunnel boat ride really is one of the most random scenes ever.

That tunnel scene was an early version of the video in "The Ring".

Ironically the remake "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" is more focussed in Willy Wonka.

So true Ryan and Ryan, Willy Wonka is sketchy but not as sketchy as Grandpa Joe. After all, being sketchy was tight back in the 1970s.

This is one of the best Pitch Meetings. Right up there with the Twilight one with Jacob and the baby.

Feels like this was made just so Ryan George could get his irritation for Grandpa Joe off his chest.

That cane scene was also the first time the child actors in the movie were meeting/seeing Gene Wilder. They were genuinely worried and surprised when he "fell."

Willie Wonka reminds me of old German children’s stories. They’re super terrifying with just enough to keep them entertained as a way to brutally convey important life lessons on not being a little PoS.

4:00 "What the hell was that about?"
Perfectly sums up the whole movie!
