Cord blood derived stem cells are a very potent source of hematopoietic cells used in transplantation. The hematopoietic activities of cord cells is however very different from those of bone marrow derived or peripheral blood stem cells.

It will be a great medical advance the day that this practice is implemented into healthcare. Not only can it solve a lot of problems for patients, but it is also client centered care. You are taking cells from the patient’s body and turning them into treatment for something that the patient wants to improve. The example she uses about the leg dying because of the clot is a great example of centering the care on the client. However, there are other interventions that could be used to treat or prevent an illness that these cells could also treat. I think that when this is implemented, health professionals should first offer cheaper interventions for treatment before jumping to stem cells. Another concern is as Physicians, this therapy should not be used in place of effort and life style changes on behalf of the patient. The story she told about her mother for example, she found out that she had an illness, and choose to ignore and not change the lifestyle decisions that could have improved her condition. This is a great advance, but I feel that it should not be used in place of effort and change. Simple things like nutrition and not smoking sometimes could make a world of difference. Another concern is if this treatment is provided and no lifestyle choices are changed, would the condition it was used to treat reoccur?
