In Africa we have water and electricity scarcity so basically all Data Centers we design is a combination of closed loop chilled water circuit with free-cooling capable chillers as well as active free-cooling systems inside the Data Halls. In short, if it is cold enough outside, the outside air is used to cool the Data Halls by using only fan power (to move the air). This way the design has a net-zero water consumption rate with the only water being used to fill up the chilled water system and the upside is that this method decreases the facilities' PUEs quite a bit making them more efficient.

When I retired from a mainframe computer center in 2005, we had been running for several years without water for cooling. I don’t know how many servers we had, but it could have easily been over 100. How come computer centers are now using water again?

They will cut us from water before shutting down one server. Beautiful future
