Bas Rutten was an early innovator in the world of MMA, combining grappling and striking in a way seldom seen before. After seeing Enter The Dragon as a teenager, he learned martial arts then proceeded to beat up all of his bullies one by one, John Wick style. He stands as a major pillar in the world of modern martial arts.

We're going to miss you, dave, but while we have you here, I'd like you to know how much we all appreciate this type of content as much as you

Anyone who hasn't seen it owes themselves the experience of watching Bas Rutten's absolutely unhinged self-defense DVD. It's amazing.

I remember watching that beautiful transition from single discipline to MMA and trying to imagine what the fights would be like in the future, only having anime and movies as a reference. Renting and devouring dubious tapes from 24-hour video stores like I was discovering ancient magical scrolls.

the most underrated Fight IQ in the game 🔥
people usually don't include his name when talking about technical masters of MMA

El Guapo!!! It's a shame you didn't go into more of his UFC fights against another underrated fight Tsuyoshi Kohsaka and Kevin Randleman. He spent practically the whole match against Randleman in his guard, but spent the entire time using palm strikes to Randleman's head that by the end, you could see cuts all over Randleman's scalp against his bleach blonde hair.

Also recommended is Bas Rutten' Big Books of Combat which goes over everything he learned about fighting and some chapters about takedown defense he wished he knew during his fight career.

Dave, I'm gonna miss you bud, no fight breakdown channel can ever replace the soothing voice and subtle wit that is The Modern Martial Artist 😢❤ Thanks for all these banger videos, both past, present, and whatever gems you got cooked up for us before you go. Back in 2014, I had recently returned from Afghanistan, where I had brought the old Bas Rutten MMA DVDs. I took part in a kickboxing smoker where my opponent had much faster hands than me but also never checked leg kicks. After eating two left hooks that were not at "work" level I decided I would prevent him from punching by making sure he couldn't walk fast, and chewed up his front leg. At the start of the second round I landed the Bas Kick of faking a low 10 and turning it into a front kick. Bas would have been happy by how surprised the other guy was.

Honestly a video on Masakatsu Funaki would be really interesting like his use of the knee on belly position and catch wrestling stuff. He's also one of the most underrated guys in early MMA and was the one who trained Ken Shamrock and many of the Pancrase fighters

Bas finished his career with 19 straight wins and 1 draw. Once he got a submission game and especially better submission defense he was next to unstoppable. Standing with him was brutal, he’s truly one of the first real modern martial artists. A real innovator and an all time great.

The self-commentary videos of his career are a must watch!

I wrote to Bas a few days ago maybe more:
I wish I saw him earlier, I would be a better man in general, no question.

He has that Real Man, Warrior/Knight quality, like Dan Severn and Don Frye IMO.
They are as hard as they come, but they also look like sweethearts in certain moments, they show respect and they show extreme violence.

i know he's not the type of legendary-tier fighter you usually cover, but joaquin buckley has an interesting boxing style that he mixes in with his wrestling really well. loved your gsp breakdown a while back, would love to see another striking guide for grapplers

Dave i will miss these videos. They made my martial arts journey thus far. You were practically a second coach of mine, and as your disciple I can't express how sad i feel about you leaving next year. I wish you good luck in the future and a merry Christmas and a happy new year .🎉

Gotta miss these analysis of yours. Thanks for creating content about The 4 Kings of boxing, Julian Jackson, Lomachenko, Salvador Sanchez and my man Orlando Canizales.

Bas is one of the best of his era, no doubt. Very high fight IQ as well and he seems like a fun guy privately. Good video :)

As someone who hates Livers myself, thank you for this breakdown 🙏

Random but it warms my heart that Kevin James really did try to put him on the map as in being A-lister famous.

It’s awesome he’s a legend in combat sports. A shame that a regular ol’ Joe or Jane won’t know who he is

Bas is one of the all time greats, an absolute warrior. As you said, his willingness to learn and incorporate other peoples and his own moves was a massive strength. Sad to hear about the retirement from another comment, I'll miss your content, but I hope you enjoy the break from it!
