Sony a7iii - Wedding Photographer’s Review

I've been shooting the a7iii professionally for a couple months now, and with several weddings and commercial shoots in the bag, and it's time to give my thoughts on it. I'll be talking a lot about how it compares to the Sony a9 as well, since a lot of people have been cross-shopping the two, and the differences sometimes aren't immediately obvious!

Fantastic review which I can't praise highly enough! Honestly, I thought "Do I really want to watch another review of the A7 iii?" I've watched dozens, possibly hundreds, and I do actually own one, but the answer is: THIS REVIEW TELLS YOU STUFF WORTH KNOWING THAT OTHER REVIEWS DO NOT. Thank you for a great job.

19:25 - it seems hardly anyone talks about this, but dynamic range on Canons, including the EOS R, is abysmal compared to Sony and Nikon. It's not even close. For me, a landscape and architecture photographer - that's a HUGE deal.

Wes:

Excellent job breaking down the strengths and weaknesses of each camera body. I, like you have both cameras. I love the A-9 for both the ceremony and the wedding reception, however I prefer the a7III for the portrait session using strobe. I plan to purchase another A-9 to work both A-9s for ceremony and receptions (wide angle lens on one and zoom lens on the other). You did a fantastic job of breaking down the differences in both cameras. Sony completely sold the A7 III as the equal to the A-9 (brilliant marketing to get people to purchase the A7III and them get hooked on it and buy the A-9) like I did.

Funnily enough, your review mentioned important things that nobody else did (I think), such as the usb-c raw transfer speed, the weight distribution, the less aggressive AA filter, good job!
That camera has an insane value, I have the A9 but I wish it had the usb-c / mechanical shutter / IQ of the a7iii. I wish both cameras could have dual UHS-ii slots instead of UHS-ii + UHS-i.
Also, about having too many MP, that problem can be solved in a firmware update, Sony could just allow us to choose the RAW output resolution, so 42mp could become 24mp (the resize can be very good quality, average 16 pixels => 9), so hopefully they give us that option in the future.

I have watched a lot of reviews of the a7iii, glad I have watched this one. Learnt something new! I made the choice to buy the a7iii, moving from a canon 700D.

It's about time to upgrade from my very old Canon DSLR, so I've been reading and watching a lot of YouTube to help make the decision. Your excellent review convinced me that it's time to go mirrorless and that the Sony A7 iii is the best fit for me.

FWIW, I very much appreciate the your presentation style—adult, low-key, non-distracting background music, and it seems to me that you're always looking through the eyes of your viewers to judge what would be useful to them. Many thanks for all that.
One question: Your thinking about using Canon lenses with the A7 iii and any specific opinions about converters, either the best, the best at modest cost, and the worst.

very interesting findings that no one before mentioned in their reviews. I own a7iii and was thinking to get a9 but decided to wait for a9ii.
Wes if you do compare review of sony 100-400GM vs 200-600G (which one to get) you'll be THE MAN !!!

Wes, Excellent summary review of the Sony a7iii. You are obviously not just an "armchair" photographer. Your summary is the most helpful that I have seen on YouTube. At a later date, hope you will consider a review of the new Sony 200-600mm.

Did you have a background in academia? The way you speak and present really comes off like such and coming from academia myself I find it super easy to watch you.

More than happy ith my a7iii. I also kept my original a7s (use it for astro only) What I have noticed though between the 2 cameras for astro work, My 24mm GM lens gives me better results on the a7s than it does on the a7iii. Do not ask me why that is but it just does.

The a73 killed it with the price and it's performance. Nothing can touch it at that price or near it. Certianly nothing from Canon or Nikon. And the others are no FF so the Sony remains king
