——————

Written in 1989, Consolation by Alexander Raskatov reflects, among other things, a personal change in the composer’s life – his departure abroad. The technique that the composer uses here is akin to minimalism, but this is a Schubertian kind of minimalism, with characteristic ‘lengths’. Typically of Raskatov, the composition is based on one idea – it is a combination of dissonant chords with ‘euphonious’ arpeggios of E flat major and C minor . These two elements are blend in the second section, which is followed by a climax as if it is based on new material, now tumultuous, then nostalgically tonal . The coda includes the pianist’s voice who sings as if with his last strength; the coda is interrupted by a powerful blow.
