Syria has reached an agreement with the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, or SDF, to integrate the group into state institutions. The Syrian presidency announced the deal on Monday, releasing images of a signing ceremony between interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa and SDF leader Mazloum Abdi. The agreement affirms Syria’s territorial unity and calls for merging all civil and military institutions in northeastern Syria into the Syrian state.
This includes control over border crossings, airports, and oil and gas fields. If implemented, it would end the SDF’s semi-autonomous control over the region, which has existed since 2015 with US backing. The deal also includes a nationwide ceasefire and SDF support in combatting pro-Assad fighters.
