My dad was 33 when he married my 18 year old mother.
They had been dating for 4 years before they got married. I was born 2 years after that.
I haven’t seen him since I was 13.

Oona O'Neil stayed with Charlie Chaplin until he passed away. She was the daughter of playwright Eugene O'Neil. Charlie and Oona had eight children together, I believe. I happen to think that Charlie Chaplin was a brilliant actor, writer, and director. The various ages of his wives is of no concern to me. Chaplin's creative genius is something I will always keep with me.

But, also… in 1918 (and 1908)… the concept of teenager was not a thing.
Sweet 16 and debutante meant that a young woman was eligible to be courted for marriage.
Child labor laws were barely enacted.

Many people in 1908 only had a 7th grade education and then began working as adults.
So… 17 being Charlie Chaplin’s youngest wife would have been legit at the time and not scandalous.

Well, it may gave been common or not, but many women left the family home early because they were treated badly, abused, physically, sexually, etc., may have had alcoholic parents or the family was poor and she was able to lower the grocery bill. Notice the age difference between the last wife and J.D. Salinger, assuming the photo is showing him at the correct age. That was not much different. I'm in my 60s. I know several people who had this happen in their family with parents and grandparents as recent as the 1950s. A good friend's, same age as I, mother was being abused by her alcoholic father. She got married in 1950 at the age of 14 to a man who was 22.
