They are grown industrially - its one of Pennsylvania's biggest cash crops - theyre grown in big industrial buildings, usually using compost as a medium. All those packages of white button mushrooms you see in the supermarket are griwn like this.

Interesting that this reel came to my feed!
I work at a mushroom farm! Specifically in the composting section that creates the compost for them to grow in!
It most definitely is waste for the most part we use… very dirty smelly business!

It's a little off topic for your channel, but good to know nonetheless 😁

As a mushroom farmer and mycologist this dude hurts my brain.
Mushroom farming is just being able to maintain a sterile lab environment on the largest scale you can for as long as you can.
The final jumping point, taking sterile spawn into pasteurized bulk substrate is no big deal.
Another oversimplification from guys like this is mushrooms are as diverse as vegetables. Growing carrots isn’t the same as growing strawberries or artichokes.
Same with the difference between button mushrooms, shiitake, lions mane, morels, et Al. Some species we haven’t even been able to grow. Matsutake for example is cultivated by termites, but we humans can’t figure it out yet. (I’ve been trying for 15 years).
Oh well. Rant over. 😅

Reason people don’t grow mushrooms industrially or that you don’t hear about it is it’s run by organized crime. Which sounds silly at first but same happens with a lot of “niche” farm stuffs
