Saving the Amazon rainforest means helping its people | The Protein Problem

Across the Amazon region, some people are trying to find a balance between making a living and protecting the planet. Nearly a third of Brazilians live below the poverty line. For those people, using the land and its resources is a matter of survival. In each location, the challenges are unique to the geography of the region and the history of the people living there.

Judson Ferreira Valentim works with farmers and ranchers to help them improve their already-cleared land. That helps them make better livings — and helps protect the rainforest.

Best way to help them is to leave them alone and quit destroying the forest. Learn from them. What a wonder that they have learned to live in balance with the earth without the greed to extract the resources for wealth.

Pres. Lula da Silva gave me some hope that the damage encouraged by Bolsonaro would be alleviated. It's early days... I do hope things do change. We have the double whammy of political dereliction and environmental meltdown.
