That use of foam is great, it's very easy to work with. I've got a bunch of leftover 3/4 inch plywood scraps I think I could use similarly.

This looks really cool, something I may well consider in the future, but possibly cut some steps to enable others; so for the tops just doing vallejo texture paste and drybrushing it with perhaps the odd bigger plant or rock to keep it flat for balancing models on, which enables more time to maybe cut some flat steps into the slopes of each hill, maybe at each cm in height, to make moving up and down them more organic.
