【ABOUT ME】
Hi, I'm Layla from Japan! I'm so happy to be a part of your Japanese learning journey!!
I love sharing my language and culture with people from all over the world. I also love watching people study new languages. I learnt to speak English using Podcast and YouTube videos on my own. So now I really want to help Japanese learners to speak Japanese with my videos!!
いつもありがとう!これからよろしくね!

It’s one of those “there, they’re, their” things

For those seeing this and suddenly feeling discouraged about learning Japanese, don't stress it. I studied Japanese for two years in college and we never touched on tone. I don't think it's something we need to stress over.

The fact that tone exists and changes by dialect is something to be aware of, though. And it's a bit amusing.

“私はあめがほしいけど、今日はあめです“

One simple accent mistake and the entire sentence changes.

Tokyo has intonation going from high to low for rain, low to neutral for candy.

Kansai has low to neutral for rain, and slightly high to neutral for candy.

If someone says you get it wrong just say you are from Osaka or another region where it’s correct💀

For other languages you can use the IPA to figure out where the stress/pitch/accent is, but i still can't find a website or app that gives me the IPA, wow Japanese is the language I've had to struggle the most at the beginning

And the cool thing is that the Osaka candy one isn't possible in Tokyo pitch accent because the first and second mora have to have different pitch

How would the pitch accent work if you’re asking “rain?” as a question

Singing the song Candy Rain by Soul For Real in Japanese must be awkward 😅
