Discover the Hidden Power of Algae

Aquarium algae is your best friend. There are 1,000s of types of algae so you might as well pick out a favorite. Although many algae are bad actors, most are pretty harmless.

The harmless algae can be found mostly in the green algae classification. There are thousands of algae in this group and they are differentiated by their appearance.

Shrimp, Snails and Ostracods eat green algae. Examples of green algae include green water. Green water is wonderful and looks worse than it actually is. Another example of a green algae is spot algae. This is a single celled algae the grows into a colony.

Algae is a sign that your aquarium is alive and that nutrients are present. But the down side to these algae are the cynobacteria algae. The algae are nasty and you do not want them in your aquarium at all.

There are exotic algae like golden algae and bird bath algae (red algae) that serve many useful purposes to both fish keepers and humans. So, you see, algae is your friend, not your enemy.

My grandpa recently died, and he left me his fish tank. I know almost nothing about fish, but your videos are extremely helpful. Thank you!

Algae is a sign of life doing well in the aquarium as long as your controlling it by having plants out competing it

What I used to do was put a piece of blunt glass outside in a bucket in direct sunlight. I'd let it sit there for a while to build up a nice mat of algae then I'd pick it up and place it in my tank. The various kinds of pleco *loved* it, they would in a few hours completely clean it off. You could see how excited they got when they were near the glass.

I've added some freshwater clams into my tank to reduce the cloudy water. They work really well.

We have matting green algae in a water feature outside. We bring clumps, of it in a pop it in the fish tank. Our goldfish love to eat it. Our oldest fish is 16 our youngest is about 9, so clearly it’s not doing any harm. New to the channel and enjoying the content. Many thanks

Thank you for explaining the different types of algae. I have hair grass in my tank which I am struggling to get rid of.

Nice video. My goldfish really love to eat the algae that grows on the glass, and my cherry shrimp constantly eat the biofilm that grows on all the surfaces in the tank

I just shot a video this morning about how discouraged I was about all of the algae in my 75gallon iwagumi tank. This could’ve come at a better time. Thank you father fish. As I said in the video, the aquarium game is a time game. Enjoy the process folks.

Nice to see all of your years of knowledge being being stored and presented on youtube. Please upload the Videos on a seperate Platform as well and try to make them available on your Website.

And if you can write several Books would that be some of the best selling Books about Aquariums.

The way I learnt is, if you have too much algae you need more plants.Once the algae is reduced, plant more plants.
