Here's a bit of Historical trivia which still plagues us today. In the late 1800's J P Morgan wrote a letter, which still exists, to his business associates in South Africa, the Rand Lords. The Rand Lords owned the gold and diamond mines there. Diamonds were so common at the time that they didn't produce much profit. They are still ridiculously common but thanks to JP they are worth a lot today. There was little demand for diamonds so in his letter he proposed to these mine owners that a, "new tradition, " must be created: the diamond engagement ring.
