Dude, you are a legend. I was debating attempting to open and clean my PS2's laser, but was really anxious to do so. This saved me the trouble. Unfortunately, my PS2 doesn't fit on my shelf sideways. However, all I do is simply hold it upright until the game loads and then gently put it back down regularly. Works great. No issues playing so far.

This is the best video ever, for years I thought my ps2 couldn't read blue I didn't know all I had to do is flip the dumb thing on its side and it would work immediately!

Thank you for this, I'd recently acquired a load of second hand PS2 games and couldn't for the life of me understand why the blue discs weren't playing. I was worried that I was going to have to purchase a lens cleaning kit, or even have to dismantle it. But this simple fix on your video has worked wonders. Thank you for sharing this with us.

Literally saved me hours of work.
Every video "Disassemble your PS2, wipe the lense, OR YOU MIGHT NEED TO REPLACE THE LASER" and one jarring solution was using a furniture polish wipe and a plastic knife which sounds stupid.
Was wondering why my load times were super slow but it's literally this too!

Long message here. This is a topic I wish was more elaborated on. Your trick does work on one of my phats, but some others on forums have said it only works temporarily. it's already a negative sign of the laser's life when it can't read the disc horizontally. but I never actually knew this was an issue on slims too!

I wish it was known why PS2s having a dead CD laser is such a specifically common issue. I've found old posts on message boards proving it dates even back to the early 2000s when the console was newer and of the 3 phat models I used I ended up having the same problem on two of them. one only reads vertically while the other refuses to read no matter what. it also won't read any DVD-Rs.

While it's a given that a laser will die eventually, the CD disc read error thing seems like an issue that's way more common than it not being able to read a DVD. and is even more bizarre to think about when DVD games naturally would be played more since CD games are less common. Does the CD laser age faster? why could that be?

I've read about some people's theories on why, some believe the disc spins so fast (apparently someone said 24x on the blue discs) that it can end up slipping around in the tray and messing up the laser (meanwhile this would be impossible on slim). and some have tried putting tape on the front of the disc to "weigh it down" and make it spin slower and this somehow fixed the disc read error for people too (although it's certainly not the safest). but PS1 games typically read at 2x and setting the disc speed to fast will quadruple it to 8x. it does not come close to the 24x speed that the blue CDs will read at. this makes me wonder if there are people with PS2s that can somehow read PS1 discs but not PS2. I just don't think there's a clear answer from anyone unfortunately. something about the PS2 and CDs has rubbed me the wrong way. it just feels like something is especially wrong with the laser life.

One more fact by the way: some PS2 CD games don't have blue backs. specifically the ones released starting in 2008 (with the exception of Iridium Runners for some reason). re-releases of Squaresoft games for PS1 that were printed around this time also did not have black backs.

As a child I randomly had issues trying to play Ps1 and blue disks and 15 years later I have answer. It was that simple

Mine reads everything with no problem, even the black PS 1 games, but struggles with blue CDs. This did help. Thank you!

I can't leave the ps2 on its side! What if I accidentally knock it over and it falls? I promised to never hurt my precious Ps2 in any way

I had to do this with one of my games. For some reason it made a weird noise when I had it lying down.

Mine doesn't so much have an issue reading blue disks as they seem to slip (and a scratch ring will actually start forming on the top of the disk after a bit). I put some blue painters tape on the top and the slipping noises stopped and the games load up now.

Eaaasy FIRST fucking try!

Very opportune moment for this video upload as I just got a PS3 fixed. A new laser reader wasn't an easy spare part to find, so I'm just here thinking about how much time we have to enjoy old PlayStations before spare parts aren't around anymore. Damn lasers... why do you have to do this Sony?
