Interesting. The way you've shown ' slur`in Russian is often referred to someone who ' swallows' words just being shy or not knowing what to reply. Without a reference to being drunk.

Dave, thank you for the lesson! I like the idea of the "ways of..." a lot. My question is about phrasal verbs. Is it okay to use "tell someone off" in the meaning of a try to change someone's mind? Like "I wanted to try the IELTS exam, but my teacher told me off, because my English is not good enough". Or are there any special phrasal verbs for this meaning?
