A Shark in Cape May - Our Video Went VIRAL!!!

This week, shark sightings along Cape May have raised many questions: do sharks usually live near our beaches, and what kinds do we see?

The shark spotted was about 5 feet long and was pushed up along the shore after getting caught in some waves.

Cape May Point lifeguards quickly got everyone out of the water to ensure safety. After 30 minutes, the shark wasn't seen again and folks were allowed back into the water.

Our video was filmed on August 5th at 3pm and as of today, the video has gotten over 3 million views and over 8,000 shares.

Let me show you the rest of the videos we took that day.

From a former SICBP guard, the credit is i'm sure appreciated. Often these days locals and those who have been coming down for years will bring lunch to some of the guards as a thank you!

Great job on the video, Joey. You're so lucky to live in Wildwood. It's such a wonderful place with all its history. And video by video you're becoming part of its history...and adding to its special vibes.

If you think that's the only shark out there, your in for a huge surprise. 6ft and larger sharks are fairly common within 100ft of the beach from late May to mid September.

It's the sharks you DON'T see that you need to worry about😅

That’s just Bob. He accidentally bit me in 1988 when I was a kid. Nice guy when you get to know him.

There should be some sort of sonic system offshore to be able to keep sharks at bay!

Joey, I'm disappointed that you didn't jump in the water and get us a closeup. Just kidding.

I recall I think in 2017 there was a Thresher shark in shallow waters in the Crest. Everyone was freaking out meanwhile me and my grandfather were right up next to it. Little guy was skittish. Couldn’t get too close.

Looks like a thresher shark going for menhaden in the surf.
Also most of the migratory sharks in the area come for the cooler waters, not warmer. Many are year round residents and don't leave in the winter.
And I doubt you catch gummy sharks since they aren't found anywhere near jersey, or even the US.

I don't have any expertise in sharks, but that does not look like a basking shark to me. Who confirmed it was? They are much bigger and move slower.

You're lucky it was harmless. Four people have been bitten in Virginia Beach already this year! At least one was only in knee high water!
