David Marquet, retired US Navy Captain and Expert on Leadership and Organizational Design, is the bestselling Author of Turn The Ship Around. David Marquet (MAR-KAY) was assigned to command the nuclear powered submarine USS Santa Fe, then ranked last in retention and operational standing. He “turned his ship around” by treating the crew as leaders, not followers, and giving control, not taking control. This revolutionary approach not only took the Santa Fe from “worst to first” in the rankings, but also created more subsequent leaders than any other submarine. Stephen R. Covey called the Santa Fe “the most empowering organization [he’d] ever seen” and wrote about Captain Marquet’s leadership practices in his book, The 8th Habit.

Captain Marquet is the author of Turn the Ship Around! A True Story of Turning Followers Into Leaders. Fortune magazine named it the #1 must-read business book of the year, and USA Today listed it as one of the top 12 business books of all time. David Marquet is here today to deliver the powerful message that in highly effective organizations, leadership is not for the select few at the top; he will tell you how he and the crew of Santa Fe developed a way to create leaders at every level.

"Act my way to thinking (differently)" - I liked the idea of changing the environment to be more team-oriented without saying a lot of words.

I like that Marquet comes across as a goofy dad, when you picture submariners as hardened sailors 😂 His book is incredible by the way, learned a lot from it!

I really enjoyed your video. There were a lot of thought provoking myths and facts in there, enough for me to start changing some of my leadership behaviour. I especially enjoyed the toilet scene. That is engineering at it's finest.

Every other person wants to be a leader, wants to run a company. Only few will actually invest 45 minutes of their lives on videos like this.

34:00 - as hard as it is to make small decisions in times of crisis...that's your waiter too. Don't defer decision-making that much. What do you want to eat? You can handle saying ir.

12:07 #SeniorCopywriterTeamLead <--- is this job more than it looks or does everyone need communication help THAT hard?? It's fine if so, but I'm confused about why it's difficult.

15:38 a designated hype man...it's not a bad idea. Why do cheerleaders exist in the first place?

OK, if he ran his boat the way he talks, we are lucky that WW III didn't happen. ;-)

Not everybody is a leader! They are not all leaders, that’s false encouragement because not everyone has the qualities to be a leader! Lots of things wrong with this conversation

He lost credibility when he said women on submarines is great.  No place for women on a submarine.
