Does seeing an inbox full of hundreds of emails fill you with dread??⁣

Whether you love them or hate them, research is telling us that tackling that pile of emails can feel overwhelming, can stress us out and can cause anxiety. ⁣

In a 2015 study published in Computers in Human Behavior, the authors found that limiting email use significantly lowered daily stress (Kushlev & Dunn, 2015).⁣

Not only that, lower stress predicted higher well-being including more positive emotion, a greater sense of social connectedness and greater subjective meaning in life. ⁣

Go figure - checking your emails less actually has a positive impact. 💻 ⁣

I want to hear from you! What’s your best tip when it comes to managing your ‘email anxiety’? Let me know in the comments 👇⁣

(Note: the term ‘email anxiety’ of course isn’t a clinical diagnoses).⁣

I was mentally affected by email notifications sound in the middle of task. I used to have urge to read and reply immediately. I overcame this by turning off notifications and having a time slots of three times in a day. 1. when I log in 2. Middle of the work time 3. end of work time(30 mins before log off).
Try this and save your mental health.

I do suffer from email anxiety because I have to deal with stupid people and their stupid questions day after day after day....

Very relatable. This anxiety attacks even in the middle of the night. 😅

I usually reply immediately. But if I think I will not able to, I press "reply (all)" and I write anything in it like "test" so that it gets saved in drafts after closing it. Then once I have the time to reply already I can always go back to my drafts.

The annoying notification (RHS bottom) when an e-mail comes in, my life became way more relaxed after I switched that off. Did the same for WhatsApp too, muted group chats and everyone else.

As soon as I open my inbox, I search for phrases that I know appear in reoccurring junk emails, like “lunch order” or “ticket giveaway” - I scan the results quickly and delete all of them. I do the same thing next for reoccur informational emails that are informative but require no action on my part. I control, select all, and dump those into appropriate folders. This greatly reduces the number of emails I’m dealing with immediately. I also take emails that require future action and either attach those to my calendar for later review. I always complete my day with as few emails in my inbox as possible.

Great advise, thank you.
I found that ending my day with a clean inbox really helps. If there are emails that move to the next day, I focus on those early in the morning and do not leave it to pile up.
Also having a folder structure has helped me to be more organised when I need to refer back to something previously done.

Whenever I need to write a longer reply, I do it at night and schedule it to be sent in the morning (or on Monday if it's weekend).

I also practice replying to emails within 24 hours. Even as simple as saying 'confirming receipt...will revert...' will do.

All of them are effective remedy, but I go for the first one.

My work email is fine, it’s my personal ones that overwhelm me, especially from my son’s teachers. I’m finding it increasingly difficult to go to my personal email.

My Suggestion is to check the action taken mail and information mail first then keep the action taken mail as unread after read. While seeing the lesser count in mailbox will give you positive mood.. Even we also have a clear idea about how many works has to be done today

I set up a filter to automatically file in a separate folder emails where I was on cc and the mail wasn't addressed to the CEO, the CFO and the Chairman and the subject line didn't contain the word Reminder.

Other such filters automatically categorised the emails, making it easy for me to focus on tasks that matter.

I do set a time limit.
It’s still overwhelming and it’s time to hire someone.

I ignore all emails and only respond to voice messages from a phone call. Of course I’m 70 and everyone I care about makes allowances for “grouchy grandpa!”
