I think the internet has played a big part in this. There's a world of information and ideas readily available at our fingertips now. How can that not have an impact on how society views things like religion.

if this keeps up, america will truly be secular, a godless america.

I like to think of it as a sign of modern society growing up, and no longer believing in the fairy tales once told.

Religion: Together we can find a cure.

Shortly before I became an atheist, I called myself a deist because I believed "some god is out there, but we can't possibly know what it is like." I think a lot of generic deists are only a few steps away from being non-believers. There's also plenty of people who "believe in" certain religions because the thought of never seeing their loved ones again is too much to handle, but they reject a great deal of the holy texts.

I'm looking forward to the day that a candidate runs for president who takes his presidential oath using the book "A Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy". In all seriousness, people should realize that religious institutions are just that, institutions. What matters most is that for people to understand that it's okay to be different and it's okay to find your own path to happiness. If that leads you to not have any form of faith, then that's okay.

I'm glad to be ahead of the times. Even when I was christian, I was non-denominational. I'm now atheist (been so officially a few years, now), and I actually think it's better on this side of the fence. I mean seriously, not having to listen to being told I'll burn in hell forever because all loving god hates us all... I'm *GLAD* to be done with that shit!

The only thing religion was good for was to make other fictional works and art cool, like books, music, movies, and video games.

We can largely thank a much greater access to knowledge  due to the internet for a large part of it and add into it those out actively preaching hate and intolerance in the street and claiming religious freedom to do so and not seeing the over all impact and cost of what their doing.

The sad thing is, those that still believe in Christianity have a good majority power, so while this is good news, it's still not a best case scenario yet.

glad to see some common sense  from some people.

Great trend: More folks are finally learning how to see through silly religious mythologies and noticing the harmful intellectually and morally bankrupt doctrines, fallacies and lies that lurk at the rotten empty cores of the blind religious faiths and money making political scams they are.

One of the many reasons why people leave religion is because they realize that faith causes them to shove reality out of the picture.

I bet if it was just people leaving Islam in droves it would be considered a "tragedy"

We have the Internet to thanks for all this. It's really provided a great platform by which people can discover that they're not alone in atheism or agnosticism. It's unfortunate that so many Americans still wouldn't vote for an atheist politician, but things are getting better.

Who cares wether people are religious or not. Talk about real issues like wealth inequality.

A decrease in the _affiliated_ religious is great.  Now let's get rid of the _unaffiliated_ religious. Nice to see the symptoms lessen.  Time to cure the disease itself.

Well, depending on if America exists in twenty or thirty years from now, we could have a majority atheist country. I don't know if America will exist in 20/30 years from now (Because everything is going to shit here & this country is slowly collapsing on its' weight & military budget), but if it does, it'll be about time & we're already starting to see it now.

any wonder why people are so miserable, crazy, angrier, crude, selfish and just plain so snowflaky these days? Its their separation from a Holy Loving and Just God. God is real and no good can come from separating yourselves from your creator. Its not a coincidence that many of societys problems from this premise. Your generation isnt smarter or better endowed w/wisdom than any previous one.
