Correction: The 7th generation of home video game consoles started in late 2005 and ended in mid 2017 while the 6th generation started in late 1998 and ended in early 2013.

Failed to mention the one thing that made PlayStation the clear and obvious winner during these times. A wifi connection was the only thing needed to play online, no bs choice of multiple subscriptions to get the most out of a game you spent £60 quid on then £400 console.

For my 14th birthday, I had been saving up like mad so that I could pool my money with birthday money to get a PS3 in 2008. I actually bought a second hand one for MORE than it cost brand new, because it was the original 60gb console with full backwards compatibility and the card slots under the flap. I was determined to get the 60gb original as I had loads of PS2 games that I knew I would want to play again from time to time. It wasn’t actually that bad of a deal, only £40 more than it cost new, but it was mint, fully boxed and came with 4 games and 2 controllers. I still have it today (technically not the same one as mine got the yellow light of death), but Sony replaced it free of charge.

PS3 arrived later because they couldn’t finish their CELL graphical solution, so they just put an nvidia chip in it.
Xbox 360, even though it had problems with red lights, still sold better because of its more traditional architecture making the games run better and positioning their system as for gaming, while PS3 tried to do another success based on showing the console as “cheap Blu-ray player + gaming console”
But then Sony gets a comeback, removes a lot of things like 4 usb ports, Memory stick/sd cards slots, lowers the price to 299$ and introduces ps3 slim.
Already then the devs got pretty much familiar with CELL processor architecture, so the games were on the same level of performance as the 360. meanwhile Xbox tried to get some moneh on the Wii success and made a Kinect… it’s actually sold well but cuz they started to focus on family friendly games the sales started dropping, yeah..
In conclusion, in the first half of the 7th gen Xbox won, but in the second half ps3 made a comeback and took a piece of the market.
Moral? If your console already sells great, just fix its problems, don’t make new!
