The bread and salt welcomes them into the marriage I'd guess. Bread and salt is used to welcome people at least here in neighboring Czechia

Dont' exagerate, hardly anybody breaks glasses these days. The same with shots of vodka- maybe it still exists in villages, but have not been to a wadding with this custom. Wedding with no alkohol re more and more popular, in my family all wedding were with some home- made vine and hardly any vodka.
The welcome with bread and salt is not just a wedding custom, it is also used when you welcome important guests, during harvesing feasts, when pope or heads of foreign countiers visit Poland
