This video will guide you through how to configure and enable your Cisco Switch or Router to use SSH (secure socket shell) in 5 easy steps.

SSH Vs Telnet

SSH and Telnet are used to achieve the same result, to connect to the switch/router remotely however SSH and Telnet couldn't be more different in terms of security. While Telnet is still widely used but it has a BIG security flaw, it transmits all login details in PLAIN TEXT causing a huge security vulnerability and allowing anyone with the know how to pick out the logging information to you Cisco devices!

SSH does have a few extra steps involved but still only takes a few minutes to set up as this videos shows you.

This video uses a Cisco 3550 Switch however the process is the same for switches and routers.

I did have a fully qualified domain name I could use but what happens if you dont? Is entering a domain name nessisary?

Where does the IP address come from? This always confuses me. A router has multiple IP addresses.

Hi, that command "username sam password cisco" is significant to both CHAP/PAP and SSH? I see that CHAP/PAP also have the same command for PPP authentication.

Hello Certbros I have a doubt I am configuring a lab for my ccna class (I have to say I am using Packet tracer) and I configure ssh step by step in the switch but then when I go to the PC and I put ssh -l username and ip It ask me for a password but I type the password and doesn't work can you help me please? it looks like this Packet Tracer PC Command Line 1.0

some what related you telnet from a switch to a router? or can you only telnet from a switch to another switch (router to router)
