This is EXACTLY why we have something called NEXUS criteria which helps us determine whether a CT scan of the neck is necessary. If the person meets ANY criteria below, a CT should be STRONGLY considered:

-New weakness/numbness (focal neurologic deficit)
-Midline spinal tenderness
-Altered level of
consciousness or intoxication
-Distracting injury present
