Here's a good machining project for the beginning and experienced machinist alike, a machinist's screw jack. This tool is useful for a variety of jobs, like leveling a part on the mill table and supporting work pieces so they do not chatter. Making this part will give experience in a lot of different machining processes, so it is a fantastic first project. Links to the prints below:

I remember seeing this series a long time ago. I have made some crude jacks but I couldn't remember where I had seen these caps being made.
Thank you for posting these great, informative videos.

I too have recently found your channel. You are a great teacher, thank you.
I need projects with dimensions to use in my shop and improve my skills as we go along. These jacks look like a fun and challenging project.

I just ran into your channel, and man, I’ve been “binge watching” since 9:30 this morning! In my early life I was in a machinist apprenticeship program for 2.5 years, but a better job and better pay, of which I couldn’t turn my back on, came along, I didn’t complete the apprenticeship, but from that, I’ve been a machinist enthusiast for almost 30 years. I have to say, I’m still enthralled by your videos, I don’t find them boring like at all, as a matter of fact, your videos are sort of like referencing the machinist handbook. Thanks for the video, I feel you’re doing a great service, specially now, that “Makers” have become much more prevalent. Well, I figure I’d comment, to introduce myself, glad to get to know ya, via your videos, they’re a great resource. Also, I found the small RFID strips, now found in all consumer product packaging:

(They’re about an inch long, quarter inch wide, metal strips, within small plastic housing) to be between .0005 to .001 inch thick, I collect the, when ever I can, to use as shim, in three jaw chucks, milling vices to ensure squareness and finding edges, though inconvenient for those edges. Sorry, I rambled on. Keep up the good work, and good luck.

That peening operation in the vise would have been a good place for a machinist jack. Go figure.

Would have been nice to see the jack fully assembled. Other than that a very nice series.
