India-U.S. relations are in the "normal" mode and it's perfectly normal to bicker over trade, disagree about sanctions and all such issues, says Jeff Smith, South Asia scholar at the Heritage Foundation in the United States. In an exclusive chat with SNI, he lauds Narendra Modi's visit for its overall positive impact on the bilateral relationship but acknowledges hard bargaining lies ahead on the trade front. India's ties with Russia, U.S. curbs on the sale of Iranian oil are other areas of discord. Kashmir is low on the U.S. radar for now, he says, but India needs to get its act together.

We signed COMCASA with the US n they talk about CAATSA.

They provide naval surveillance and submarine detection P-8Is n ask us not to buy S 400s.

Want to make trade deal but remove India from the GSP list.

Say Kashmir should be solved bilaterally but Trump wants to mediate.

This mixed signalling is basically coercion and arm twisting tactics to join American alliance for which S.Jashankar is the right candidate to navigate out of.

If we want to be a major power we should not be anybody's ally.

India must strive to prove its strategic autonomy to USA rather than budging to its coercive policies. They must recognize India's special partnership and the strategic position in the Indo-Pacific and leveraging it for India's interests.

the title is deceptive, the contents appear unbiased, the guest and the host are very presentable and discuss relevant broad issues.

Y no one speaks about plight of hindus in specific and minorities in general in Islamic Countries. Pakistan & Bangladesh was bharath, if china  holds Tibet & can claim arunachal Pradesh, y does it have problem with kashmir

India over rated its international importance and influence. At best, India is made use of by US due to its self glorification. Having shaken off British colonial rule, India is unconsciously and willingly submit to US hegemony.

India immediate needs is economics not political correctness with the West. Joining QUAD will not help India economic development. A friendly neighbor China and learning from its development experiences outweigh the border security threats from China and Pakistan in Kashmir. China has not fired a shot for its economic success, neither has China not shared in its prosperity by countries in the neighborhood.

India wants to be a great nation and somehow is preoccupied to beat China to the game. The realities are after 40 years, China GDP is now 6 times that of India and its international influence n technological competency have extended into space. Based on historic record, the notion “West is Best”, is not the path for any nation in the pursuit of economic progression nor international power of influence in the world

Very good interview, particularly what American thinktank and analysts are thinking. Jeff Smith had been cautious in answering on quad and its objectives. Inspite of Trump's bravado there will not be much on Pakistan and Afghanistan as far as Indian is concerned..too early to predict.

Don't expect any friends or allies in international affairs - there is no such thing and there never has - it is all about being diplomatic and leveraging cooperation and self interest for all it is worth. In international relations, there is no such thing as ideological friends or enemies apart from perhaps the Islamic world, and even there it is only a small number of countries that engage in this (currently only Pakistan, Turkey, and Malaysia in the Islamic world are ideologically anti-India). That is what India has been doing wrong in its assumptions about international relations.
