It's been my experience that if we're talking about it in serious manner, they've already had it for a decade.

DDG 1000 cost 13.7 billion, followed by a short trip through the panama canal right into dry dock for another 1.3 billion in repairs a few months after being built.

The laser system laws is functional. Targets and fires upon up to 132 targets a minute at range. 70kw laser. That 300kw is for hardened targets and to punch through waves or weather to deliver shot on target. LAWS is active.

Waste of taxpayers money..The government should be spending that money on things that actually help american citizens, not contractor's bank accounts!! SAD DAY AND AGE IN THIS COUNTRY.

Werent those Russian hypersonic missles on Ukraine not intercepted?

We need to populate the low power laser on all frigates and carriers ASAP to knock out drones, aircraft, and normal missiles. Then I guess the carriers house the hypersonic missiles killing lasers as soon as the are ready. Hopefully only on reactor is required to power the big boy. Maybe the old carriers can disable their engines while firing. Then we might need a new dual reactor frigate designed to power the low and high energy lasers. It is likely we use both types of lasers at the same time to use energy efficiently.

So, , , , you said that the new carrier will use hyper-sonic missiles which we don't have, but Russia and China do have them. And actually, China has hyper-sonic missiles that are designed and have been tested to evade countermeasures from Carriers. But you said we shouldn't worry, because we are developing lasers that could potentially disrupt navigation of super-sonic missiles, if we can aim successfully. Well, I for one, am worried that we are a sitting duck, and our posturing globally is attracting hunters from everywhere. It would be wise for us to stop posturing and causing wars around the globe, because if things escalate, our nukes will not save us. Russia has six times more nukes than us, and if you've never heard of the tzar bomba, look it up and educate yourself. One of these is the only requirement to destroy an area the size of the entire UK.
