For his 2008 campaign, Obama basically invented the methods of specifically targeting ads to certain people. In 2012 his campaign managed to extract the entire Facebook Graph, something that the FB staff was surprised they could do. After the election, his campaign became a Super PAC to advance his goals. In 2016 Trump's campaign did much of the same, but outsourced it to Cambridge Analytica.

One of these was praised to the moon for his tech savviness, one was demonized and it was turned into his first scandal. You can guess who was praised and who was not. Cambridge Analytica didn't do anything that Obama's 2012 campaign had not already done.
