25$ per rental per jump. 100 jumps x 25$ = 2500$. A used rig is about 5000$. A new rig is about 8000$. 200 jumps will pay for your used rig. About 300 jumps will pay for your new rig. A new rig will hold is value longer. So you can sell your new rig if you take care of it at probably 6000$. A used rig about 4000$. These are things to think about. So, you'll end up with an actual cost of about 2000$ which again, not renting, paid for itself on less than 100 jumps. All told, buy new container and reserve, buy used main of you can find it and then, every jump you can know that you've made a wise financial decision. The time to sell is after 300 jumps (or more) on that rig and down size with the money you spent on the first rig. Skydiving economics.

First thing I bought was a helmet. Whether it's at a DZ or the tunnel, those helmets are funky! I got lucky and bought a Phantom on sale for $130.

Recently got my A license, saving currently so I will likely be able to purchase a rig around the time I achieve my B license. Couldn’t resist buying a full face helmet already :)

Should I get my own helmet if I am a AFF student? I don't mind the helmets they provide it just the size is either too tight or too loose.

Even tho i can rent those here too (im in Rio de Janeiro), during these crazy covid times i think ill just at least get my own helmet and suit. I know the guys at the skydiving company are doing their best to keep all their equipment safe and clean, but it would def be one less thing for me to worry on the back of my head. By the way, your video about jumpsuits is excellent as always and def helped me to better understand and make a decision on what to get.

Why is skydiving gear so expensive? I understand canopy's and containers, because of all the testing and high standards for safety and quality, but I'm looking at digital altimeters, and they're like $300-$400? Helmets being around the same price. Jumpsuits around $400-600. What's the deal?

Great info Cat on this video and that is why I subscribed to your channel. I am still a student skydiver in Canada and Progressing as a skydiver. I got a new skydiving jump suit royal blue 4 mouths ago online. At are drop zone you have to have a 100 skydives before you can have a helmet with a video camera mounted on the helmet so after many more skydives I will get a helmet that I can mount a video camera on it. Blue skies Cat and I am looking forward to your next video.

Does the B licence correspond to a specific number of jumps in Canada?
I'm asking because in France, where I mainly jump, the B licence is usually validated with 30 jumps and the canopy downsizing is strictly controlled until you get 2000 jumps...
Therefore, the advice I received was to wait at least 100 jumps and having a canopy size under 200 ft² before to buy your own rig and it would be better if your rig can accept a smaller canopy.

400.00 seems like a big investment for a helmet until you smell the rentals. People sweat when they work in the tunnel or look out of a plane they plane on exiting without saying bye to a stewardess.

Hey Catherine,
I'm not sure what the regulations are for you over there in Canada, but here in the UK students are not allowed to wear fullface helmets until they have their B licence. There is also a minimum of 50 jumps with a few other requirements in order to obtain the B licence. Good advice though and as always will pass this info along.
