Paul Kagame sworn in for new seven year term as President of Rwanda

President Paul Kagame has been sworn in as president of Rwanda in a colourful ceremony in Kigali today. Kagame was swearing in two weeks after he was re-elected for another seven-year term after garnering 98.7 % of the votes cast the August 4th presidential election.
He had contested against two lesser known candidates; Frank Habineza, of the Democratic Green Party of Rwanda and Philippe Mpayimana, an independent candidate. President Kagame was sworn in by the Chief Justice Prof. Sam Rugege with the First Lady Mrs Jeanette Kagame by his side. Following the administration of the oath, president Kagame received symbolic instruments of power, which included a copy of the constitution, national flag and the coat of arms from the Chief Justice. Rwanda Defence Forces Chief of Defence Staff General Patrick Nyamvumba handed the President a shield and sword-symbolic of national defence. The colourful swearing-in ceremony was witnessed by about 20 heads of state from all across Africa, representatives of countries and international organisations as well as over 25,000 Rwandans at the Amahoro National Stadium in Kigali. In his inauguration speech Kagame thanked Rwandans for giving him an opportunity to lead them. He hailed his countrymen for shunning division and embracing democracy.
