How to Update Your Google Home (And Make Sure You Have the Latest Firmware in 2018)

How do you update Google Home's firmware and make sure you have the latest update for your Google Home in 2018? It's not that easy, and it can cause a lot of people some heartache. Of course, this tutorial how-to video also helps you update your Google Home Mini, and Google Home Max. Both of those devices can cause you a bit of an issue when updating Google Home and the Google Assistant.

Of course, it's very important to keep your Google Home updated in 2018. You can get access to all of the new and upcoming features as soon as is possible. I also show you how to trick the system a little and get updates ahead of other users.

The first trick is to join the preview program. This has a lot of us on the 124602 update instead of the standard 118 version of the Google Home. Secondly, it also helps to choose your language as English United States instead of any other language. This will get you a bit of early access vs other users of the Google Home.

If you need any recommendations for home automation products, here's my Amazon Influencer Shop. Yes, I make money if you buy a product from Amazon through this link, but I've only included products I personally recommend. It's a curated list of high-quality smart home products.

Thanks for watching, and please subscribe below!

Great video. Made all the changes, and waiting to see them take effect. Hoping this enables the new 'conversations' feature.

I watched a video about a month ago how they were releasing new firmware. Including multiple voices tried it out yesterday ( when prompted a mans voice came out and wanted to know if I wanted to switch to him lol) I honestly wanted a female with UK accent. Also you can now ask multiple questions or make multiple requests only having to say the trigger or hot word once. Supposedly your going to be able to change how you trigger google home assistant. The coolest thing is, I was watching a google dev convention and the google home made a phone call to the Hair shop and made an appointment, and was able to negotiate the appointment time, and finalize and set the appointment. The voice that called sounded like a regular woman's voice not robotic at all. If I can find the video in my history I will link it I have to take a look.

Brian, this is great! I think this is very important information and YouTube is a terrific way to present this information.

Yesterday, I was called by Dan, the senior Manager of the support staff of Google Home. We have dialoged and agreed to inform each other. So I have a pretty direct means of sending feedback, when/if I find issues.

Currently, we are testing the issues with the Reminder system, when there is a reoccurring reminder. When I say “remind me everyday at x:xx to do I do not always get the audible reminder.

I have a major objection to the “automatic” update. On the competing apple products, they offer an update and then do it when given permission. Google, on the other hand, updates when THEY want to. This is bad and dangerous. An update can have a problem, so I want to know when they will occur and what is being updated. I want to control when the updates occur, just like with Apple and Microsoft software.

Thanks. I used the language hack few months back to get kids story. That messes up my weather forecast and updates and some other things and I had to spend several hours

Not sure why Google is treating us out side US as second class people and do most of the things still only available in US. I am sick and tired of Google. It's voice recognision for me is going from OK to bad. I have 4 mini's and over time I now rely less and less on google as when a new feature announced they promote it but only available to US in most cases.

I am happy with Home Assistant and it handle my automations. I am making my home more intelligent. Why waste asking google to do when HA could do it based on my logic without asking. Google will not make that happen. Mostly it want to get more info of my bahaviours so that it could target me. I am able to break free from Apple, Amazon and Google and get things working within my home network with Home Assistant without internet too

Well, since this video was posted, about 7 days later there was a brief (approx 10 hours?), world-wide google home outage.
Rumours were that it was associated with a security problem where javascript on a web page can "chat" with the google homes on your home network, and get the MAC address of the access point being used, then look that up in a location database to pinpoint your location. (location without your permission).
The rumour was that the fix for this is what took the servers down.
Curiously I don't recall joining the preview program, yet both my Google Home devices are on that US-only preview firmware.
Maybe they fixed the problem by getting all the Google Home's to jump to that newest version?

I'm in Australia, so, if I change my language to US English instead of AU English will the firmware update then can I go back to AU English and still have the updated firmware?

Nice information. All of ours were up-to-date and after that last fiasco no thanks to Beta.

Unfortunately changing just the language won't give u all the features which you have in the US... :( I tried, but it does not work...

I have a Google Nest Mini, and every time I tell to turn off all the devices in my living room, it says "Okay, the device is updated". (Btw I'm from Denmark, so I don't know if it really says that in english, but if I should translate from danish to english, That would be it)
How do I get it back to just say "Okay, turning off 7 devices"?

Hello! That's really strange, but my google home mini doesn't update at all. tThe firmware version is still 1.39.154941. On a google home support page there is another version of firmware. The preview program is turned on in account's settings. What can I do? The version was the same 1 month ago I think.

I rather not do this especially the biggest fuck up Google made a few weeks ago where it had crashed every device

I have a question.  I placed my current two google home and google mini in a group.  How in the heck do I get the google to play on these speakers at the same time by speaking to it. I can do ti through my phone but can't get it to work by speaking.

My firmware version I see in the Google Home app is newer than what is shown on support.google.com
So this sucks
