Back in 2002, The Flaming Lips pulled off a miracle. Twenty years into their career, "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots" became the band's greatest artistic triumph as well as their most commercially successful album to date.

"Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots" proved to be an intricately textured, psychedelic album that was bright, colorful, fun, lighthearted, happy, and sad all at the same time. Disguised as a fantastical science fiction tale about a tiny Japanese girl fighting huge pink robots, "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots" also managed to deal with heavy themes such as mortality, existentialism, love, artificial emotion, and impermanence.

In this video, we'll take a closer look at the visionary "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots," arguably one of the most unique, and extraordinary albums of the early 2000s. Is it really a concept album? How has it stayed relevant? And most importantly, what's actually the meaning of the pink robots?

Great video! I remember the first time I heard the album; what resonated with me the most was the melancholic take on the hero's story. We all have our own pink robots... Thank you for featuring my art 💝

The flaming lips was the first band I ever saw live and I grew up listening to this album, it’s been with me my entire life so I really appreciate your thoughtful and in depth coverage of it!

I did an eight CD mix commemorating my time in college. “Do You Realize” is included and it was amongst music that evokes the springtime and what I call “bright introspective”: transcendence, profundity, enlightenment.

It also plays in the background of a scene in Boyhood … speaking of “life going fast” and finding it “hard to make the good things last” =]
