The second half of ‘Defund the Police’ is ‘Invest in Community.’ To fund these resources cities can either increases taxes or reallocate spending. It makes the most sense to take that money from the often insanely highly police budgets since crime prevention and mental health street response teams make the police’s jobs easier.

"Defund the Police" was always terrible branding. The Left needs to take a note from the Right when naming things and coming up with slogans. The Right will name an organization something like _The Patriotic Society to Protect Voting Rights_ when their actual goal is to suppress voting rights. The Left needs to learn branding.

"Defund the Police" should have been called something like "Improve the Police" or even "Support the Police." Improving and supporting means diverting funds from giving the police military assault vehicles and combat weapons. Instead those funds would be used for building social and mental health resources. When someone has a non-criminal issue it's handled with appropriate and compassionate means instead of sending in a goon squad of amped up cops with itchy trigger fingers whom have been told repeatedly that everyone is out to get them.

Actually "Defund the Police" is exactly what you've described as what you stand for. You're not a slogan guy, David, but neither are the people who came up with DTP because it totally got you to misunderstand what it means.

"Defund the Police" was a dumb tag line. It's really a campaign to fund other things, such as mental health, and relieve the police of responsibility for things they don't want the responsibility for anyway.

Defunding the police was never a good slogan. My idea is re-place, retrain and reform the police. Plain and simple.

I honestly thought "defund the police" meant to spend less on assault weapons, military vehicles and intimidating riot gear for police departments, and to spend more on de-escalation training for officers and training in how to better handle people with mental health issues, along with putting that money back into the communities. Am I wrong about that?

Defund as in take away a lot of their expensive tools like aviation, armored vehicles, automatic weapons, etc.

Completely agree! As a European, non-native speaker, I pointed out at once that "defund the police" was the most unfortunate catchphrase that somebody came up with and lead to completely unnecessary headlines and debates. It completely distorted the urgent need for reforming, restructuring, redistribution of funds etc. Let the expression "die in peace":-)

Defund does not mean abolish. "DTP" is about reforming the police budget. Less spent on assault-style gear & ghost cars.
