Container ship main engine - How to replace a piston

It is presented an overhaul procedure for a ship main engine MAN B&W 8S50ME-C. It takes about 12 hours to complete this job.

This is a great video I worked as a heavy equipment mechanic for 20 years I was always facinated by these huge engines someone said how can you run one without a piston well these big brutes are not like car and truck engines the connecting rod fastens to a cross head, the cross heads funtion is to give circular motion for the piston rod which is rigid, moves only up and down the cross head rides in vertical raceways on lower block if you remove the piston turn or block off lube passages fuel supply lines the engine can be operated only one cylinder less allowing ship to get underway again if nessesary engine must be shut down for a period of time to remove piston and rod ect ect .again great video I understand completely!

i liked doing this job at sea as wiper in the engine room everyone in both departments helps out!! Fire up the coffee pot steward sends down cold cuts and beer back in the old days when beer was aboard in slop chest. Cleaning and repairing super heater tubes on steam ship fun to.

2 questions....how do you know you have  bad piston? And what is the piston to cylinder clearance in these type of engines....

yes you can shut down that cylinder during repairs. thats why all heads and portings are singular, they can fire up with out running that piston but would need to be shut down while replacing it again.

Nice to see that hard hats and goggles need not be worn. Every hand tool accident I ever saw was down to goggles steaming up.

There must be a lower deck to connect the connecting rod to the crankshaft.
