KIMLE
Üdvözlünk Kimlén! Benvenuto a Kimle! Pozdravljamo vas Kimle! Welcome to Kimle!
(The County of Győr-Moson-Sopron)
The coat of arms is a shield erect, base curved to a point. Field azure is parted per three bends argent, referring to the three branches of the Danube. In upper field, two flowers with 5 petals gules and argent and leaves vert bending to sinister and dexter respectively. In base field also two flowers with 5 petals gules and argent and leaves vert bending to sinister and dexter respectively. The flowers are symmetrical.
Kimle has 2300 inhabitants, it lies on the banks of the Moson branch of the Danube, next to the M’ autoroute that runs to Győr. Its name is first mentioned in 1210 in the form of Kamana, it originates from a Slavic name. According to oral tradition it comes from the word kém-les. Three settlement, Horvátkimle, Magyarkimle and Novákpuszta were united in 1966 to form today’s village.
The first Croatian families arrived in 1534, and they settled on the right bank of the river. Later, in the 18th century German families settled on the other bank of the river. For centuries Horvátkimle was inhabited by Croatians, while Magyarkimle was inhabited by German-speaking people. The two territories were first connected by a ferry, and then from 1923, by a wooden bridge (the pillars can be seen near the new bridge). The iron bridge that is used today was built in 1966. This bridge has the heaviest traffic in the Szigetköz. Kimle lies on both sides of the river kilometres long, the curves of the river touch twice the village.
The fauna and the flora of the territory is very rich, as two areas, the Hanság and the Szigetköz, meet near the village. Presumably the territory was inhabited in Roman times as well, thanks to its natural setting. After the settlement of the Hungarians, here lied the defending line. Inhabitants warned the others about foreign groups, and they captured the spies of the enemy.
In Magyarkimle there is the Church of the Virgin Mary. Its oldest parts were built in the 13th century. During archaeological research the gate of the church and the loopholes were discovered. There is a statue of the Holy Trinity near to the church, and a 110 years old lime tree. It is worth to take a walk in the cemetery, there are century old German-inscripted gravestones. Celebrating the Millennium, the village erected the statue of king Béla, IV. (sculptor: Tibor Rieger) The basis of the Roman Catholic church comes from the era of king Béla, IV., it was rebuilt in a Baroque style in 1768, the organ is 150 years old.
In Horvátkimle, there is the church of St. Michael, which was built in the 17th century, although there are some Gothic features in the church Near to the church there is a statue that commemorates the 450th anniversary (1984) of the settlement of the Croatians, and also there is an obelisk which was erected to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the 1848-49 war of independence. The walkway between the church and the cemetery is surrounded by chestnut trees, that were planted in memory of those who were dead in World War I. In 1993, stations of the cross were placed, made of wood. In the cemetery lies the philosopher, priest and poet Mate Mersic Miloradic, who was the parish priest of the village for 50 years. On the main street of the village the statue of St. John de Nepomuc can be found, which was erected in 1783.
The village has a vivid community life, the local government of the minorities (Croatian, German) and the Kemene Dance Company have an important role in organising community life. Their traditional feasts attract a lot of tourists.
