The Troggs - With A Girl Like You (1967)

The Troggs (originally called the Troglodytes) are an English garage rock band formed in Andover, Hampshire in May 1964. They had a number of hits in the United Kingdom and the United States. Their most famous songs include the US chart-topper "Wild Thing", "With a Girl Like You" and "Love Is All Around", all of which sold over 1 million copies and were awarded gold discs. "Wild Thing" is ranked #257 on the Rolling Stone magazine's list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time and was an influence on garage rock and punk rock.

I remember back when this song hit the airwaves, and graced the ears of my 15 year-old self. I didn't follow the hit parade at the time - other distractions ruled.
But this particular song became my anthem - because I was that shy boy at the dance, and the theme fit me like a glove.
I loved this song to bits. And a year later I made the pledge in the song come true. It's almost a perfect song. I went on to become a musician / songwriter. And I'm still amazed at the construction of this one. The Troggs faded into obscurity around the time my 17 year-old self was busy discovering the cool roots of all the music I loved best, that long lovely history welling up from 1900 New Orleans, and the massive movement that sent all that beautiful cool up the Mississippi toward St Louis, Chicago and New York.
But what the Troggs did for that shy boy I'll never forget.
