Origin of the Legendary SAS - World War II

Показать описание
The Special Air Service (SAS) was formed during World War II, specifically in July 1941, by Lieutenant Colonel David Stirling. Stirling, a British Army officer, saw the need for a small, highly trained group capable of carrying out raids behind enemy lines. His concept was radically different from the conventional large-scale operations prevalent at the time. The formation of the SAS was approved after Stirling personally presented his idea to the Deputy Chief of Staff. He argued that a small team could be more effective at sabotage and creating disarray among enemy forces than larger units. Initially dubbed "L Detachment, Special Air Service Brigade," to deceive the Axis powers into believing a parachute brigade had been formed, this small unit was tasked with deep penetration raids against Axis airfields and supply lines in North Africa.
The SAS quickly distinguished itself with its daring and unconventional tactics. Their first successful mission was "Operation Squatter," a parachute drop in support of Operation Crusader. Despite facing significant challenges, including poor weather conditions that scattered the troops and resulted in many being captured or killed, the mission marked the SAS's debut into war. Under Stirling’s leadership, the SAS adopted the use of the heavily armed jeep as their primary means of attack, conducting hit-and-run style raids that became their signature operation. These highly mobile raids allowed them to inflict substantial damage on enemy airfields and disrupt supply routes, demonstrating the effectiveness of their innovative tactics and solidifying the SAS's reputation as an elite fighting force.
