this is the best tutorial about proxies and these codecs that I've ever seen! You put so much of really important-to-understand information into just a couple of minutes! I'm very impressed, because the most people on YouTube just saying "proxy is lighter version of your footage in lower resolution" or something like that, which not only doesn't make things clearer at all, but can even mislead you… So back in the days (5+ years ago) I spent, I think, months to fully understand all of this. If only I had this video in that time…

Great video! A deep dove on the media management tab would be very beneficial.

Thank you for this. I'm still digesting it however. I get that proxies are lower quality "substitutes" which can speed up editing by not bogging down the system - and then the source clips are used to make the final render. I got hung up on the Media Manager, were you using it to make proxy files? You mentioned the reduced file size in the final render...again, rendering the proxy files?
Your sharing of your knowledge is greatly appreciated, even if I have to struggle a bit. I have what I think is a beefy PC, and use an SSD for Resolve - the paid version, and I still get stuttering video sometimes. But I never specifically generated proxies before. I will try this. With Resolve, or any premium video editor, you need to know quite a bit just to get started. Trial and error only goes so far before frustration sets in!

Great post! simple to the point! Just a question: I am taking advantage of the new proxy generator in DR... is that a good approach? I mean, I keep on loading files there and use then as I go along... that is ok right? chers!

Hi Tim, great video thank you ! A question if i may ? does DR save the proxies in separate files like Premiere or are they like a built in internal format ? Thanks J

Thank you. I’m trying to edit some iRacing footage but they’re really long clips and my pc, which I feel like has pretty good specs, was basically showing me stop motion. Extremely frustrating and nearly impossible to use. This will hopefully make my next video possible. I really appreciate the information a whole bunch of people

How do we incorporate the proxies we generate in camera into the DaVinci workflow. Sony cameras do the proxy generation automatically - while shooting- if you turn the setting on.

So good. So, so good. One TINY, but huge thing that I was hoping you'd cover: how to relink Proxies back to Full Rez. In Resolve 17, there was a FULL RES LINK option. Me no see now. I such a dunderhead. Back to surfing the Tubes for this answer.

wow best so far, sir, yes that misleading is so annoying! . so is there a way to make the viewer in half (or lower) resolution but has faster (more smoother) playback ? since full resolution, half reso, or quarter reso have the same laggy playback in edting page, thank you in advance

Many Thanks for this. Loving the enhanced tech knowledge you have above and beyond other content creators. And Yes, I would love a tutorial on the media management option as I have asked others and have had no response. I am only a hobbyist but have a drone with 10bit capability and a 360 5.7k camera with a slowish graphics card/CPU (I do edit using an SSD though) I am always looking to save space but still add effects. Also, do proxies affect colour grading and / or tracking. I seem to remember they do...
