I like the advice given in Works and Days such as "Do not put all your goods in hallow ships; leave the greater part behind, and put the lesser part on board; for it is a bad business to meet with disaster among the waves of the sea, as it is bad if you put too great a load on your waggon and break the axle, and your goods are spoiled. *Observe due measure: and proportion is best in all things.*

I’m so glad you mentioned Hercules animation movie 😅. It’s so good. Very interesting to learn about Hesiod. Didn’t know he lived in same era as Homer.

Omg I'm so excited that I've found your channel. I've been on a bit of a greek/roman literature and mythology kick. I just got a copy of Hosiod and Theognis from Penguin Classics so I was curious to search on YouTube. Your channel is like a dream come true

When you were talking about Hesiod being concise, I had a traumatic flashback to four months of translating Cicero in grad school. Eurgh.

Thanks for another wonderful video. Since I discovered your channel I have increased my library with 3 versions of the Iliad, 2 of the Odyssey, the Aneid, Hesiod, and Euripides. I even read The Secret History. I also added Stephanie McCarter's Metamorphoses. Oh, Stephen Fry-Mythos.

Dear Erica, Hesiod (ΗΣΙΟΔΟΣ) was born in Askra Boiotia (ΑΣΚΡΑ ΒΟΙΩΤΙΑΣ) mid 7th Century BCE and writes
that Homer was hundred years older. His village Askra still exists by the SAME NAME ! about one hour drive
from Athens. A Greek friend, Nikephoros.

I love your videos. Will you make one all about Seneca The Younger, a context one? I would love to see your take on his life.

You are you so knowledgeable, I’ve read Hesiod, but Homer is just too long for me … and waffles on!

The Homeric translations I have are too old too.

Thank you

I’m loving that little reference to Disney’s Hercules ❤
I have that “We are the Muses” line committed to memory as well. Very cool! 😆

I hate it when “purists” denigrate movies like Hercules and Troy because they don’t necessarily follow the myths to the letter. For me, it’s the atmosphere that they convey that’s important.
In fact, I’m not ashamed to say that the Hercules film was probably my first exposure to the pantheon of Greek myth, and if I hadn’t seen films like Hercules and Troy I possibly wouldn’t have gone on to study Classical Civilisation at degree level.

This is interesting!! For some reason, I was always under the impression that Hesiod’s texts were a bit older than Homers! Interesting that they were actually around similar times! 🫶🏻
