Imagine if Digimon had a "Who's that Digimon" segment similar to pokemon and they showed a shilouette of Betamon only for everyone to guess wrong because its not, instead it was Madokibetamon.

I think the best way to handdle variants is to pick something that makes it different and run with it in evolutions and lore/behavior. Like, Goburimon and Shamanmon are basically a recolor. But, you can do some interesting things with Shamanmon being... well, a Shaman! You can also have it evolve into something else than Ogremon to give it even more of a different feel.
So if we took some silly example like Modokibetamon, if you give it a different personality/trait/lore that makes it different and make it evolve into stuff that is less common for the regular Betamon... That's good enough in my book! Doesn't have to be like a seadramon variont or its own unique line. Just different enough to make it interesting.
That may be a good video idea!
