A friend of mine rewired his front porch lights to be in series. Using two incandescent bulbs, each is about half as bright as they would have normally been. But you can't buy incandescent bulbs any more? No problem, his have been working continuously at half wattage for over 30 years now. Seems they really appreciate running cooler than they were designed for.

It's because of the current, when in series the current dips and isn't sufficient to light up the higher wattage lamps.
